Hints & Tips for Filling out Your Application Form
Your application form is very important because it is the only basis on which we decide whether or not to shortlist you for an interview. The following advice should help you to complete the application form itself as effectively as possible.
Some points to bear in mind before completing your application:
- Please read the job description, person specification and any supporting information carefully before completing the application form.
- Ask yourself why you are interested in the job.
- Think carefully about your application.
- Try to complete the form in a concise, well organised and positive way.
- Consider doing a rough draft first.
- Make sure you allow plenty of time to complete and send your application form in order to meet the closing date.
- If you are applying for more than one job, please do not submit the same application for all jobs.
- CVs will not be accepted.
The Application Form
The following headings correspond to the appropriate section in the application form:
Details of other training/qualifications
Please include details of any other qualifications and training not included elsewhere. Training could include external training or in-house training provided by your previous employer plus training provided by voluntary groups or clubs, which you feel is relevant to your application. Ensure nothing important is left out.
Driving Licence
This section only needs to be completed if having a Driving Licence is a performance requirement of the post. The person specification will tell you this.
Are you related to a member of Mosscares Committee, Staff or Contractor or Consultant
The law requires that we find out from you, at the time that you make your application for employment with us, whether or not you are related to someone who is either employed by Mosscare, a member of Mosscares Committee of Management or any Sub-Committee, or a consultant or contractor who regularly works with the Association. Insofar as the request regarding a present contractor or consultant working with the Association is concerned this would not ordinarily mean someone who is employed by the consultant or contractor firm but rather someone who is part of the management team or structure and who has influence over the business and its decision making.
The purpose of this advanced disclosure is to ensure that no one obtains the benefit of employment just because of whom they know. The Association is striving to ensure that only the best candidate, identified following an open and fair procedure, will be successful in securing employment with the Association. For example, the Association will ensure that any person identified as being connected with you will have no part whatsoever in the process of interviewing you or assessing your suitability for the post in question.
The declaration you are being requested to complete does not mean that you cannot be employed by the Association. If you do indeed have a disclosable connection with one or other of the categories of persons mentioned above, it means that the Association has all the relevant factors when considering your application to enable the Association to take steps to ensure that the recruitment process, in respect of your application, is open and fair.
If you require clarification or further explanation from us before completing your reply please telephone the Human Resource Manager on 0161 226 4211 for further assistance in completing this request for information.
Reasons for your application
This is the most important part of your application as this gives you an opportunity to state how you match the person specification.
In considering your experience, remember all your previous work both paid and unpaid. You should think about your experience, skills and abilities gained outside work, which may be relevant. Also include your reasons for applying.
Continue on a separate sheet if necessary.
References
Please give the names and addresses of two persons from whom references may be obtained. The first should be your present or most recent employer. School/College leavers should give a Teacher/Lecturer as their first referee. The second referee should be another individual in a position to support your application and assess your suitability for the post.
If you have not been employed or have had a long break from employment then character references are acceptable.
It is normal practice for referees to be approached (for short listed candidates) before interviews are held. Please indicate on the form if you do not wish referees to be approached before interview.
Criminal Convictions
The disclosure of a criminal record will not debar you from appointment unless the interviewers consider the conviction renders you unsuitable for appointment.
Under the provisions of The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, you are not obliged to give details of any spent convictions.
For posts of Warden, Deputy Warden, Casual Relief Warden
If you are applying for one of these posts please complete the additional form that will have been enclosed along with your application form.
The Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form Procedure followed
An Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form is sent to all applicants with the Job Application Form. The form should be returned by the applicant with the Application Form but not attached to it. As the Application Forms are received in the post, those dealing with the post pass the Application Form and the Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form on. From then on they are dealt with separately.
The Equal Opportunities Monitoring Forms are identified by number only, using the same number given to the job application. Staff other than those doing the short-listing carries out this numbering. When the short-listing has taken place, the Equal Opportunities Monitoring Forms for those who are short-listed are separated from the total group using the numbers on the forms. An analysis is then undertaken of all those completing Application forms, of those short listed and of course those who are offered and accept the jobs. From the analysis it may be possible to draw conclusions about the functioning of the Associations Equal Opportunities Policy.
Disability
If you have a disability, please complete this section so that we can make suitable arrangements if you are called for an interview. If you require any help with your application due to a disability please contact the Human Resource Manager at Mosscare.
